Thank you for your email of 2nd July. Bell metal is a brittle alloy formed by mixing copper and tin with roughly 22% tin and the balance copper. Damage should not occur provided the bell is permitted to vibrate freely after it has struck. It therefore makes sense to muffle the hammer rather than to muffle the bell.
